"Mr. Willow Glen" Cardale Evans

This is a blog by Amy Rueda from Authentic Skin. Amy was able to develop a close friendship with Cardale Evans and helped produce to the memorial video.

Dr. Rick Bernard— Director of the Center— began treating Cardale with the ancient Chinese Medicine of “Cupping” a year ago due to Cardale’s diagnosis with late, stage 4, Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer. We captured Cardale being treated with cupping on film in this video about the Center located on top of our homepage:

www.rickbernardacupuncture.com Cardale joked that being filmed shirtless on our video about the Center would drive all the ladies to sign up for treatments!

We measured Cardale’s oxygen prior as well as after the detoxifying treatment and it would improve 50%. He also was able to sleep comfortably laying down when usually on non-treatment days, he had to sleep sitting up. Cardale was also excited to take a break from his inhalers for several days following his cupping treatment. After he had exhausted all forms of Western Medicine, he found solace in this ancient treatment and sometimes would ask for two treatments in a week.

He was by far one of our most treasured clients and though he began treatment late in his diagnosis, he was able to light up our office and inspire us on many levels. Because Dr. Rick Bernard was so inspired medically by Cardale’s amazing response to cupping, Dr. Bernard actually treated him weekly for free in exchange for Cardale’s huge smile, generous laugh and huge hugs. Cardale’s living several years past his 6-month original diagnosis was a true testament to the power of positivity, the power of the mind over the body, and the power of the love he put out into his environment.

This video captures the love he reflected on several key members of our community (whom he worked with daily) in downtown Willow Glen, San Jose, California.

This memorial video (which he watched weeks before his passing) will air locally on Channel 15, Friday January 28th at 6:00 and again February 4th same time, same channel.

Were you touched by Cardale Evans and like to share how he inspired you? Have you seen the way one person can link several people through their power of positive energy and light? Please give us your feedback and comments and please pass this video along as part of Cardale Evan’s legacy.

***A special thanks goes out to Brent Haley of Left Hand Man Productions www.left-hand-man.com, whom unfortunately never met Cardale, but did this video on a shoe string budget because of his generous heart and willingness to participate in this amazing gift to Cardale and his family and friends.

This memorial can also be seen on our website.

Planning for Education: A Poll, TV Show, and Event

In the beginning of the New Year we are going to merge a show, poll, and event together around one central idea: planning for your child’s education. The television episode will focus on multiple areas to consider when outlining the path of schooling for your son or daughter. The segments will include information about child development and what to look for in a daycare service or preschool; what types of extracurricular activities are fun and important for adolescents; what the difference between pubic, private, magnet, and other K-12 types of education; and how to financially plan for schooling from preschool to college. During the same time the episode airs, there will be a poll on our website to determine the various opinions when it comes to family finances and a child's education. The poll will help with the discussion at our third Community Enrichment Event. At the event there will be speaker who will present on the costs of the many types of schooling (preschool, private K-12 schools, and college) and the methods for saving for each. The event is planned for sometime during the first half of February.

If you would like to receive notices of when the episode will be airing, when the poll is active, and the date and location of the event please contact us; or "like" us on facebook or follow us on twitter.

What A Delisious Second Event!

Our second community enrichment event was another success! Thank you all who attended and helped us keep Willow Glen in motion! We'd also like to give a huge thanks to Chef Joe and Chef Deb for putting on a wonderful and tasty demonstration. With the knowledge he provided we know all the attendees will create a simple and incredible turkey dinner next week. For more about Joe and what he does as personal chef we encourage you to visit his website.

This event couldn't have been possible if it weren't for our Supporting Cast Members. Cucini Bambini not only promoted the event to their customers, but allowed us to use their fantastic in-store kitchen. If your looking for a fun activity for your child, they specialize in cooking classes for children age 3 and up. They have classes and events for all ages though (especially adults who are kids at heart), so go to their website to see how they make the kitchen experience a fun experience. Domus also helped us promote this event and if your looking for any cooking utensils to help with your preparations on Thanksgiving, or for any gifts for this holiday season they are the store for you.

If you missed this event don't worry, there will be plenty more next year. Please fill out our current "Interests" poll or email us your interests and we'll plan events for you.

We just have a few episodes left in our second season, but we have one question: What do you think is keeping Willow Glen in motion? Contact us and let us know what you would like to see in our third season. Or let us know how we can make the show better; we changed our format this season, did you like it more than the first season? You comments are always appreciated, and they don't have to stop at the TV show. We've expanded our services to the community to continue to keep Willow Glen moving; what topics for our events would you like to see next year? This was a great year, help us have an even better one next year; keep tuning in to our show every Friday at 6:00pm, come to our events, and together we can all keep Willow Glen In Motion

Supporting Cast Members

Integrated Wealth Management is our main sponsor and is what allows us to produce new episodes, and events like our first community enrichment event on September 29th. For events like that one though, we've looked to a couple other local businesses to help us promote. They are our Supporting Cast Members and are chosen because we feel like we can form an equally benefiting partnership. The business helps us reach out to their client base, and Willow Glen In Motion provides an event that could be of value to their customers.

The two Supporting Cast Members for The Art and Technology of Storytelling are Treehouse in the Glen and Babybuzz Cafe.

Uh Oh... The Retail Poll's Not Working

It looks like our current poll for retail stores has stopped counting votes. We're not sure exactly when it stopped working, but it's been at least a couple of days, and our web designer is currently working on the issue. If you've recently voted, please try again next week. We'll announce via facebook and twitter when exactly the poll is working again so make sure you like our page and follow us. We're sorry for the inconvenience and hope your vote still gets counted.

P.S. Once it does start working again, we'll extend the voting period.

"On September 8, 1927, Willow Glen voted to incorporate as its own town in order to block the Southern Pacific Railroad from going through their neighborhood. Throughout the years, Willow Glen has continued to maintain that unique quality of our own little town."

The celebrations in Willow Glen during the month of September are meant illustrate that the strong sense of community is the same as it was over eighty years ago. TV Show Scheduling for the Next Few Months

We stated earlier that for our next two shows we would be featuring San Jose State University. Since the 2010 Fall semester starts on August 25th and the people we would be filming are busy preparing for it, we have decided to film in September. So for our next two episodes we will be filming the Lincoln Avenue favorite restaurants (Top Nosh, The Grapevine, and Aqui) and three non-profit organizations. We're scheduled to film on the 30th; the episodes will air in September. The SJSU episodes will air in October.

Remember we have a new time! Willow Glen In Motion now airs on Fridays at 6:00pm on Comcast channel 15. Want to see what non-profit orgs we'll be filming? Follow us on twitter.

The Favorite Food and Beverage Establishments!

After a month of voting and over 1000 votes received we have found the favorite eating and drinking establishments on Lincoln Avenue. The favorites are Top Nosh, The Grapevine, and Aqui. We will film them in an episode later this month and it will air in September.

We will be starting a new poll this week in order to find the favorite retail stores on Lincoln. Just like the restaurants, the top three will be featured in a future episode. While your waiting for that poll, vote in our interim poll and help us plan future community enrichment events.

About Deborah T. Simon: Speaker at Our First Event

Deborah is an education administration professional who is also a lecturer, writer, public speaker child advocate and minister who talks stories. Drawing from her rich family history inspired by Momma Tee, and using stories from around the world, she weaves vivid, colorful, powerful pictures that tell of a time past, a time present, and a time yet to come. She talks stories to teach lessons, she talks stories to entertain and delight, she talks stories that challenge our beliefs, and she talks stories that touch our heart.

Deborah received her B.A. in Fine Arts and Masters in Education from San Francisco State University and received a Masters in Divinity from the four year Meru Seminary in San Jose California. Deborah was ordained an interfaith Minister in 2005.

Listening to Deborah talking stories is magical. A great storyteller she tailors the story or writes a customized story to meet the needs of diverse audiences including business leaders, parents, educational professional developers, and workshop leaders in the educational arena; and audiences of all ages.

Deborah has presented as keynote speaker at conferences and conventions, her stories have set the tenor of business and professional development seminars. She has worked with the Art Council Silicon Valley as a teaching artist placed in preschool classrooms and an early education professional and educator. As a lecturer, she includes stories to set the foundation for discussion, stories that provide a window into a subject area, and stories that can be used in the classroom to connect two or more subject areas; Deborah also teaches "storytelling" for educators at San Jose Community College in San Jose.

All the stories written and all stories shared by Reverend Simon are her offerings to the world for reconciliation and peace. Deborah Simon gives you stories for your heart, your souls, and your Spirit.

The Next Episode to Be Filmed: San Jose State University

For our next two episodes we will be featuring the great university in Willow Glen's backyard: San Jose State. You may think it's just another school in the CSU system, but did you know that some the programs offered are nationally ranked? Or that it is the only California State University to have a meteorology program? How about that the library is the biggest library in the United States shared between a college and a city; or that inside, it has the largest Beethoven collection outside of Europe? We'll start filming near the end of August and look for the two episode series in September to learn more facts and information about this wonderful close-to-home school. In the meantime, next Wednesday will be the start of a two episode series dedicated to Scouting. Starting on Friday August 20th Willow Glen In Motion will be aired on Fridays at 6:00pm.

As part of our second season of the TV show, we want to do an episode on the food and drink establishments in Willow Glen. Since there are too many wonderful places to cram into a 30 minute episode we have left the decision to you, the Willow Glen residents. After the poll is finished on August 6th, we'll film an episode featuring the three top businesses. Maybe it's the food you come for, maybe it's the people that serve you, or maybe... it's... just... the BEST! Whatever it is let us know. Go to our homepage or Community page to vote. A Bigger Perspective

Willow Glen In Motion is more than happy to be back for this second season. As you can see from the episodes, our format has changed slightly. This new format is not the only change though. Since we have had such a success with the TV show, now we’ll be taking on a bigger perspective towards our community involvement. Our goal is to bring people together. This will be done by announcing all Willow Glen activity and events on our website, twitter, and facebook. We want to make sure everyone is informed about everything. We will also be hosting community enrichment events; these will be social gatherings with a keynote speaker on a topic of interest to the community. All of these events will be open to the public and the first will be held in September. For more information you can email (spencer.wgnm@gmail.com), call 408.288.7886; or follow us on twitter and facebook. Dancing on the Avenue!

Well it was another fantastic year of Dancing on the Avenue. What a great event we have here in Willow Glen. The music was good, the food was delicious, an of course, the people were great. Here are a couple of pictures we snagged during the festival. If you would like to share your pictures with us you can do so on our Facebook group page

Filming on June 21st

We just filmed two more episodes this week. The subjects of them are alternative medicine and producing local TV. There were a few things different for this shoot. One was the scenery; we moved from the Grapevine Wine bar to the other side of the avenue (and what seemed like back in time) to Park Place Vintage. Stan Harris, our wonderful director, also crossed the wires, stepped under the lights, and wound up on the other side of the camera. Now the episodes are running through the cutting room and they'll air in a couple of weeks so stay tuned to Channel 15 and also our Website. What's next you ask? Ask us on twitter or facebook and we'll let you know. </p

Twitter and Facebook

As mentioned in the last blog, Willow Glen in Motion is expanding its services to the community. Now instead of just producing new episodes we'll be investing our time in unifying the whole community. We plan on doing this by informing the public of all communal activity. In the "Affiliations" blog we stated we are having some technical difficulties with adding new pages. Once we solve these problems (which will be soon!) we will be adding a "Community" page too. This is where we'll post all events happening in Willow Glen (along with anything else benefiting the community). On twitter we will post more frequent updates of these events and competitions we will be hosting. So it is important that you follow us on twitter as well as checking in on our website. On twitter will also post discussion topics for people to share their thoughts on. We believe that part of bringing people together is allowing them to discuss their opinions and ideas; these discussions can go even further on our facebook page. On facebook we will also keep an updated account of all upcoming events in the area, but there will be a discussion board too. Here people can start their own discussion thread or contribute to an existing one. While we do not have our own opinion towards any topic we still believe it is important to create a space for community members to talk about subjects of interest or concern with their neighbors. The facebook page is meant for you, the community member, so in addition to the discussion board feel free to post pictures, stories, or anything else you want to share on our wall. As you can see, this website is only part of Willow Glen in Motion. To get the full experience you need to "follow" us on twitter and "like" us on facebook; and together we can continue to keep 'Willow Glen in Motion.'

A glimpse into next year

Willow Glen in Motion has concluded it's first year of programming with a Holiday Special that breaks the standard Willow Glen in Motion mold of show development.

As we look at programming for 2010 we continue to look for ways to make our programming more interesting and informative. In our first few shows we will be exploring new programming structure and editing in an attempt to reach as many people as possible with the richness, beauty and opportunity that makes Willow Glen such a great place to live, work, shop and play.

WGIM Finds a New Host

Welcome to Emma Hopp, a Senior at Willow Glen High School, who answered the 'Casting Call' and assisted with the production of 'Teens in Willow Glen'. Emma did a great job as the host of Willow Glen in Motion. She has now been tapped to replace Kevin C. Swanson as the regular host. . . NOT! Hopefully though we will see Emma again in a future episode of Willow Glen in Motion.

We have had over 1,175 people watching our show on the Web and countless others watching on Comcast Channel 15 on Wednesday nights at 9:30pm. Build It and They Will Come

My vision was to create a show about Willow Glen for Willow Glen. As we are wraping up our fifth episode and beginning our sixth, the number of people from Willow Glen watching our show has been limited due to our ability to reach out to the community and make them aware of our existance. This last week our show has doubled its viewers in three days due in large part to postings on the eList and blogs on the web. A lot of time and resources from a number of individuals go into making this show a reality. We want to provide a show that is of interest and value to the Willow Glen community. Let us know what you think of the show and let others know about it. Thank you to our current viewers and a special thanks to those who have made public comments that raise the awareness of our show.

Website Launch

It has been easier to assemble a team, dream up shows, shoot and edit the shows and get them on the television and web than it has been in building a functional website. It is always about the team and I'm glad Lee Brooks introduced Willow Glen in Motion (WGIM) to Mohammad Mohtasham our new web designer. He was able to rebuild our site from the ground up and make it easy to edit and update. Looking for a good web designer? Send me an email and I'll introduce you.

The Vision

Being a Bay Area native, I thought I knew a lot about my home. When I was in High School we had an exchange student stay at our home for a year. As we went with him to see the "Points of Interest" I learned that I didn't know as much as I thought.

As the owner of Integrated Wealth Management in Willow Glen and an active member of the Willow Glen Business Association for a number of years, I realized that the there was a richness to the culture, the history and the people that made Willow Glen special. I wanted to explore that richness and share it with the community of Willow Glen. I want to share the "Points of Interest" that make up the Willow Glen's culture from the past and into the future.

I brought my ideas to Stan Harris, the owner of etc. . .group in Willow Glen, and with the assistance of the Willow Glen Business Association, Willow Glen Neighborhood Association, CreaTV San Jose, and a staff of volunteers and students from San Jose State University, the vision became reality . . . Willow Glen in Motion.
